AR500’s A1 Steel Alloy Armor Level III+ Body Armor plates offer the highest level of NIJ III+ protection in AR500’s line-up.  They provide stand-alone and multi-hit protection from the most common rifle threats (5.56×45 M193, 5.56×45 M855 / SS109 at a velocity up to 3,100 feet per second, and 7.62×51 M80 Ball (.308 Winchester) at velocities up to 3,000 feet per second, and 7.62×51 Armor Piercing (AP Black Tip) rounds up to 2,800 feet per second, and all lesser rifle, pistol, and shotgun threats.  The 10″ x 12″ plate is the most common size armor on the market, providing adequate coverage for the vital areas of most people (heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels).  The plate is also available in a 11″ x 14″ larger size.  The Shooters Cut, curved plate provides more comfort and flexibility while moving the arms in defensive shooting stances.  It fits almost all industry standard plate carriers that are capable of accepting Medium and Large SAPI body armor plates.  This plate is designed to be used as a front or back plate and is 100% constructed in the USA.

AR500 Armor uses a ballistic grade steel alloy core that’s maintenance free and only .31″ thick.  Standard plates come pretreated with a FragLock coating which increases the plate’s ability to protect against ammunition spall and fragmentation.  The treated steel core is stress fracture resistant, giving it an extreme advantage over ceramic, Dyneema, UHMWPE, and other armor that can fail if dropped or exposed to impacts.  The protective coating also provides a fully sealed design that’s impervious to liquids, chemicals, and harsh elements.  Customers also have the option of upgrading to a Build-Up coating.  The extra coating further reduces spall and fragmentation by absorbing more of the bullet material into the outer shell of the plate, instead of deflecting it.  A standard plate weighs only 8 lbs.  The Build-Up coating adds another 1.5 lbs and up to a total thickness of .56″.  Please note that because of demand, choosing a Build-Up coating can add up to several more weeks of expected delivery time for your order.

Before your final purchase, you’ll also want to decide if you’d like to add a trauma pad for your plate.  Trauma pads are constructed of a non-Newtonian material and are designed for the sole purpose of reducing the amount of blunt force energy felt by the armor user.  They offer no additional ballistic protection and add about 5.9 oz and .25″ in thickness to your plate carrier.
